BEAMING UP
Teachers around the country are blasting off into cyberspace and returning to the classroom with astronomical lessons
Studying the stars by Internet
Astronomy is these days not simply a subject for kids who enjoy watching the stars at night or maybe an eclipse in daylight. It has become a source of basic knowledge about space technology, satellite communications and natural resources - essential subjects for people wanting to keep up with current affairs.
Before 2001, astronomy was just a part of science studies in Thai schools. Now, it has become an independent subject on the curriculum for all students at Mathayom 1 to 6 levels.
However, there's a problem. Because there is no major course in astronomy offered at a Thai university, the country does not have enough teachers to support the curriculum and teach the subject.
Therefore, the Learning Centre for Earth Science and Astronomy (LESA), the Thailand Research Fund (TRF) and Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Education have joined forces to develop an on-line e-learning programme called iAstro, to strengthen schoolteachers' knowledge about astronomy and space.
Thakoon Kerdkaew, the LESA's president and developer of the iAstro curriculum, explains that the programme is divided into two parts. The first, iAstro 101, covers knowledge of astronomical observation and the Solar System for students from Mathayom 1 to 3. The second, iAstro 102, covers fixed stars, galaxies, the universe and space technology for students from Mathayom 4 to 6.
"Each lesson not only contains theories in text for study, but also a practical activity for outdoors experimentation. Learners will also be given computer software called Stellarium so they can study astronomical phenomena in a 3D-simulation programme for a better understanding of the lesson," Thakoon says.
The iAstro course is a one-year online-learning programme with two semesters of study. Each semester covers four months. Not only schoolteachers can enrol. Any holder of a bachelor's degree is welcome to join the programme.
Those who complete both iAstro 101 and 102 will be awarded a certificate from Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Education.
